Dr. Stefan B. Williams discusses current AUV work

Dr. Stefan B. Williams, the head of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System AUV Facility and member of the Australian Centre for Field Robotics at the University of Sydney visited MSTF to present current AUV work conducted at ACFR on efficient, stereo based Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping and dense scene reconstruction methods designed for high resolution 3D seafloor mapping. In his presentation, Dr. Williams discussed techniques for 3D scene reconstruction, visualisation, novelty detection and classification, as well as the specific tools developed for creating and visualising 3D texture mapped models of the seafloor. Dr. Williams described the outcomes of several research cruises where the AUV Sirius had been operated by Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System, illustrating how advances in SLAM techniques are facilitating the construction of very large scale seafloor maps and the extraction of scientifically useful data.”
